Lot Essay

According to the inscription, this painting was produced in 1969 at Wuting Hu (Five-Pavilion Lake) in Brazil. In January of that year, Zhang Daqian underwent eye surgery in the United States, after which he returned to Brazil for further convalescence. This painting was formerly owned by Pei Yen-Chiu, who was a banker in Shanghai before emigrating to Hong Kong in the 1940s. There he founded Smart Shirt Manufacturing Ltd and was a personal friend of Zhang Daqian, who visited Mr. Pei's family in Hong Kong on several occasions.
