The square seal of olive-green color and surmounted by a turtle-form finial, its shell rendered from the brownish portion of the stone, the seal face inscribed, 'Xue Qiao'

Lot Essay

The name Xue Qiao, is associated with Cao Yin, who was the grandfather of Cao Xueqin, most widely known as the author of the renowned novel Dream of the Red Chamber. In his younger years he was playmate to the Kangxi Emperor, and the two remained close for years after. Xue Qiao later became an important court general, and was also a famous book collector, scholar, and calligrapher of the Qing dynasty.
