TWO UNUSUAL BRONZE CHAMFRONS, DANGLU
WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY (CIRCA 1100-771 BC)
The first cast in the lower section as a horse's nostrils and muzzle, the center section as a taotie, and the upper section as two long ears centered by a diamond-shaped boss, the concave reverse with three straps for attachment; the other unusually cast in the shape of a nose with nostril-shaped lower section and diamond-shaped upper section, with four attachment straps cast on the concave reverse, the smooth, dark olive-green patina with areas of malachite and earth-colored encrustation; together with two small bronze dome-shaped harness fittings, each with an attachment strap spanning the hollow reverse

Both of these chamfrons would have decorated the harness on the head of a horse.
