Ayrton Senna
World Champion driver 1988, 1990 and 1991.
Generally recognised as the greatest racing driver of the modern era, Ayrton was signed by Peter Warr for Team Lotus for the 1985 season and stayed with the Team during 1986 and 1987. During this period he won the first of his forty one Grands Prix. he won the Portugese event of 1985, which was only his second race for the team, going on to win a total of six Grands Prix driving Lotus cars and setting innumerable Pole Positions on his way to his eventual tally of sixty five. During 1986 Ayrton would wear several helmets for different events, depending on the weather and circuit conditions.
This particular 1986 helmet, during which season he won at Jarama and Detroit, was last used by him in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix at Adelaide when he again set Pole Position, after which it was given to the present owner . It carries the mark of a heavy stone impact to the 'John Player Special' display above the visor. During the race Aryton used a 'drinks' helmet to avoid dehydration. This was the last occasion on which the famous John Player black and gold colours appeared in Formula One. The helmet is one of Aryton's original bright yellow ones, with his national colours, pearlescent blue and green stripes by the most famous helmet artist, SID of Brazil.
