Lot Essay

Day was in charge of motor vehicules on Shackleton's Nimrod expedition and on Scott's Terra Nova expedition. He made the covers for SPT and is recorded as being a competent amateur artist ('Day, Taylor, Debenham and Wright all contribute to the elaborate record of the bergs and ice features met with.' Scott's Last Expedition, London, 1914, I, p.51). He painted both during and after his visits to the Antarctic.
