ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912)
Document signed ('R. Scott'), THE TEXT IN THE HAND OF L.E.G. OATES, instructions for the dismantling of the stables at Hut Point after the departure of the ponies on the southern journey, n.p. [Hut Point], n.d. [early November 1911], one page, 4to, on lined paper.
Oates's methodical instructions show his characteristic attention to the requirements of the ponies: any remaining forage and bran is to be collected and stored; 'All partitions in stable to be taken down and piled outside -- The two end walls to be taken down ... The whole floor to be dug out down to the gravel. All old sacks, seaweed etc: to be thrown out'; any new animals arriving should be fed initially on bran mash, and afterwards only slowly introduced to corn; Anton is to prepare a picketing area on the ice for these.
