AUDUBON, John James (1785-1851) & John BACHMAN (1790-1874). The Quadrupeds of North America. New York: V.G. Audubon, 1854. 3 volumes, 8° (263 x 191mm). Half-titles, 149 hand-colored lithographed plates (only, of 155) by W.E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly after J.J. and John Wodehouse Audubon (lacks plates VII, XXIV and XXXVIII in vol.I, plates LXI and LXXXI in vol.II, and plate CXLI in vol.III, pp.75-76 in vol.II detached and with small holes along upper and outer margin, a few tissue guards torn, lightly browned throughout, mainly marginal light spotting, browning a little stronger in vol.II). Contemporary roan, covers lavishly decorated in blind and titled in gilt, gilt title on spines, gilt edges (quite rubbed, spines scuffed and head of spines chipped, front cover of vol.II detached and vol.III almost detached).

The Quadrupeds was first published in three folio volumes between 1845 and 1848, with 150 coloured plates, supplemented in 1854 with an additional volume of text and 6 plates. The first octavo edition, issued in response to the success of a similar edition of The Birds of America, contains all of the original 150 plates, with 5 of the 6 supplemental plates, reduced by means of the camera lucida.
