FIRST EDITION. Wallace stayed in the vast natural laboratory of the Amazon for four years, coming into contact with native peoples unaffected by European influence, and sending home a sizeable quantity of natural history specimens, mainly of birds and insects. Barba de Moraes II, p. 368.
