Lot Essay

This flightless New Zealand bird was thought to be extinct until sealers captured the bird alive at Duck Cove, Resolution Island, Dusky Sound in 1849. The bird was the subject of Keulemans' plate XXXII in Volume 2 of Buller's A History of the Birds of New Zealand (London, 1888).
