Lot Essay

George Tobin, an amateur artist and naturalist, provided the sketches which became the main visual record for the voyage of HMS Providence 1791-1793, under the command of Captain Bligh on his second breadfruit voyage to Otaheite (Tahiti) and the West Indies, the official artist W.Kirkland having to withdraw through illness before they sailed. This present view was taken during his service on board the East Indiaman Sulivan, sailing to Madras and Whampoa between the autumn of 1788 and June 1790.
