CASE: with oak carcass, baluster handle and large viewing aperture to the top, fishscale side frets, repeat button to right side, moulded base on bun feet DIAL: 5½ in. wide engraved silvered dial with subsidiary seconds, signed 'James McCabe/Royal Exchange/London/2609', date and day subsidiaries below, blued steel hands MOVEMENT: with twin chain fusees, maintaining power, gilt platform with monometallic balance to under-slung lever escapement, strike/repeat on two giant bells simultaneously via two hammers, strike/silent lever to back plate signed 'James McCabe/LONDON/2609'; winding key, original brass-bound mahogany travel box with articulated sliding front cover and recessed brass handle

Lot Essay

James McCabe was apprenticed to Reid and Auld, Edinburgh and became Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1822. He continued his father's business in The Royal Exchange, London and established strong trading relationships in India, exporting large numbers of clocks and watches.
