A GREEK SILVER GILT SKYPHOS
CLASSICAL PERIOD, CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
The body tapering to the raised ring foot, the exterior with gilt incised decoration consisting of five bands filled with alternating diagonal dashes, above row of pendant triangles with rosettes suspending seed pendants with granulated tips; beneath each handle gilt discs consisting of concentric bands filled with incised dashes and circles, suspending a further five seed pendants from rosettes; the foot with gilt band of bifurcated buds, incised concentric rings on the underside

Lot Essay

The finely incised decoration on this skyphos closely resembles Greek gold necklaces of the same period. For a necklace of similar design cf. D. Williams and J. Ogden, Greek Gold Jewellery of the Classical World, nos. 22, 64, 68 & 120.
