Lot Essay

The carpet depicts the arrival of Yusuf in Zulaikha's quarters, her attendants cutting themselves in response to Yusuf's sublime beauty.

The large naskh inscription cartouches above the field contain couplets of Hafez, Ghazal no 3. The upper smaller inscription reads Tehran Fath'allah Kirmani ........

As in the Safavid period, so it seems that in the late 19th century it was frequently the weavers from Kirman who changed designs elsewhere. Lot 187 shows an pictorial rug woven with a design that would have been considered very audacious at the time, signed by a Kirmani weaver living in Isfahan. . Here is another ambitious pictorial carpetcloser to a miniature painting than earlier pictorial rugs, again signed by a Kirmani weaver, this time resident in Tehran. He has used the typical Tehran colours and part-silk technique, but with them created a carpet unlike any other pictorial example.
