Lot Essay

A carpet with a similar field design but woven in silk is attributed to Khotan (Davide Halevim. Magnificent Carpets and Tapestries, Christie's London, 14 February 2001, lot 42). A field combined with very similar border can be found in an earlier carpet attributed to Kashgar and illustrated in Hans Bidder: Carpets from East Turkestan, Tübingen, 1964, p.XII, while an earlier version of the border is found on a very early silk Khotan (Bidder, op.cit., pl.XVIII).
