Lot Essay

In 1893, the company Vincent Robinson successfully sold the 16th century world famous Ardebil Carpet, reputed to come from the shrine of Sheikh Safi in Ardebil, to the Victoria and Albert Museum, for a massive sum. In celebration of this Edward Stebbing, the Managing Director of Vincent Robinson, published a richly illustrated volume lauding the carpet, the result of which was a massive number of carpets woven with this design in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is very unusual to find this design however being used in the manufacture of a part-silk Tehran carpet such as the present example.
