Lot Essay

The approx. knot count is 7.5H x 7V per sq. cm.

This is a very atypical design for Kashan silk carpets with its overall design of brightly coloured panels containing floral designs. It appears however to have been one of a very small production of almost identical carpets. Another carpet woven from the same cartoon and with the same colouring appeared at Sotheby's New York, 3 December 2002, lot 285. The only difference of that carpets to the present example is the lines on the vases in the corners. Here they are horizontal whereas in the other known examples including the Sotheby's carpet they are vertical. A very similar carpet with a variant on the same design was sold in these Rooms 14 October 2004, lot 142.
