JOLY, Adrien (1772-1839). Arts, Métiers et Cris de Paris par Joly d'après nature. Paris: [L.M. Petit and] Martinet, [c. 1813].
8° (215 x 129mm). 60 (of 62?) hand-coloured engraved plates. (Plate 43 and a few others a little spotted.) Contemporary English half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt (upper joints cracked, spine rubbed and restored at head, one corner restored, others bumped); later slipcase. Provenance: James Methurst Poynter (bookplate; ?his translation of the plate titles in ink above each plate, erased titles in pencil at bottom margins).
AN EARLY ISSUE OF THIS RARE WORK with frontispiece labelled 'Afficheur', carrying the title and numbered plate 1; without independent title or text found in the later issue (Les Petits acteurs du Grand théâtre ou recueil des divers cris de Paris, c. 1815). In early-issue copies seen by Colas, the 'Afficheur', though carrying the title, was plate 57 in the series; while the present plate 57, 'Balayeur', was plate 1. Colas notes that, despite the consecutive plate numbering, this work was not homogeneous; in the present issue only plates 1, 56, 58-60 are after Joly. Plates 61-62, by Maleuvre, absent here, are said to be lacking in most early-issue copies. A FRESH, BRIGHTLY-COLOURED COPY. Colas I, 1552.
