The sliding superstructure with twin elevating hinged sides and canted angles above a pair of glazed doors enclosing five removable shelves, flanked by foliate cast mounts on plinth base and concealed castors,one internal hinge stamped 'HORN'S/PATENT', the castors stamped 'COPES'

Lot Essay

Portfolio cabinets with hinged and rachetted tops were fashionable library furnishings during the 19th century. Gillow's Estimate Sketch Book for August 1836 included a closely related design (no. 5106), its selling price listed as £13.2.6.
