A PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED LACQUER RECTANGULAR JARDINIERES
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-95)
Each carved through layers of red lacquer to the black lacquer ground with shaped cartouches enclosing scholars and attendants carrying baskets of flowers, lingzhi and peaches, beside a lake beneath pine and wutong trees, within surrounds of stylised lotus sprays and scrolls at the canted corners, the everted mouth rim with lotus scrolls and key-fret, all raised on bracket feet, the interior and base with black lacquer

Lot Essay

Jardinières decorated with carved lacquer are rare. A single jardinière of quatrefoil section with similar scenes is in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan (see Illustrated Catalogue of Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1981, pl. 61).
