Lot Essay

Richardson's inscription on the verso of the mount proposes Saint Fintan as the subject of this drawing. It seems unlikely, however, that either of the Irish saints of this name would be natural subjects for an Italian artist of this period; nor can the twin events of exorcism and baptism, or the Classical costumes, be reconciled with the miracles of either Saint Fintan.
