Lot Essay

In 1883, the painter William Arthur Toplis took a fortnight's holiday in Sark and was so captivated by the Island that he sent for his possessions and spent the rest of his life there. For the remaining fifty-nine years of his life he set about with single minded determination to record every part of Sark's forty-mile coastline.
