His first recorded work seems to date from 1836 when he executed views of St Brelade's Church and Peirson Place and Old Court House, and in 1840 twenty-six of his drawings were used in a series of lithographs for the Rev. Edward Durell's Scenic Beauties of the Island of Jersey. In 1846 the visit of Queen Victoria provided the opportunity to draw eleven pencil studies of the visit which were also lithographed to make up, The Royal Jersey Album. In 1847 Ouless advertised himself as a 'portrait, landscape and marine painter' but it wasn't until 1850 that he began his extraordinary career as a 'ship portrait painter', his output in this area being extensive. As a result he often visited the ports of southern England and the coasts of Normandy and Brittany. In 1868 Ouless made a trip to the Gaspé and La Poele in Newfoundland where he recorded the settlements there of Channel Island fishermen who had been drawn to Canada by their trade. Throughout his carer Ouless covered almost every point of the coast of Jersey in both watercolour and oil and his paintings of ships provide a valuable record of Jersey's Golden Age of steam and sail.
