Lot Essay

The present cup and cover relates very closely to another highly comparable piece (now lacking its lid) reputedly gifted by Johann Georg III, Elector of Saxony, to the Danish king at a banquet in Copenhagen in 1665 (Kappel and Brink, loc. cit.). This latter cup, now housed in Schloss Rosenburg, Copenhagen, is carved with a similar tapering body and rests on a squat foot with a stylised knop.
