Lot Essay

The densely decorated cabinet, richly inlaid with floral designs, is typical of those made in Goa in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Interestingly the decoration is inspired by Persian designs, which was characteristic of Goanese creations at this time. (See R.W. Symonds, "Furniture from the Indes III", The Connoisseur, August 1934, p. 117, and plates VIII and IX).
