QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Modelled in the form of a flattened archaic bronze hu, carved in relief with ribbed interlacing ribbons terminating on either side in a central stylised serpent heads surrounded by further mythical beast heads interspersed by abstract archaistic designs, the waisted neck and flaring foot with wave bands, the shoulders set with horned mythical beast loose ring handles, the stone of a mottled pale spinach green tone

Lot Essay

The form and design are close interpretations of archaic bronze hu dating to the late Western Zhou period such as the pair from the Lucy Maud Buckingham in the Art Institute of Chicago, illustrated by Colin Mackenzie, Adaptation and Invention: Chinese Bronzes of the Eastern Zhou and Han Periods, Orientations, June 1993, fig. 1.
