8o (183 x 108 mm). (Last two leaves separated and with some losses at gutter affecting a few letters, some browning and soiling). Contemporary calf-backed boards (rear cover detached, worn). Provenance: contemporary inscription on title: "A. Hume to Sophia Lane," possibly a relative of the author.

FIRST(?) EDITION. One of two editions of this very popular Quaker tract, published the same year in Philadelphia--one by Bradford and one by Franklin and Hall (see Miller 445). Sophia Hume's lengthy exhortation is dated at end "Charles-Town in South-Carolina, the 30th of the Tenth Month, 1747." Pages 156-158 contain "Divine Love Commemorated," fourteen 4-line stanzas of verse. Evans 5974 (conjectural date of 1747); Evans 6166 (conjectural date of 1748); Hildeburn 1076, Sabin 33780.
