Tyroff, text in double columns in Latin and German, 24 hand-colored engraved plates by and after Roesel, each accompanied by an anatomical key plate, 8 large engraved head-pieces after Roesel, C. Harrich and J. J. Preissler. (Some dampstaining.) Contemporary calf, sides stamped with the gilt coat-of-arms of Carl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria, spine elaborately gilt in 8 compartments, first compartment stamped "B.P." (Bibliotheca Palatina) second with red morocco spine label (minor worming, some light marginal staining). Provenance: Carl Theodor (1724-1799), Elector of Bavaria (armorial stamp on sides and "Bibliotheca Palatina" stamp on spine); Munich, Royal Library (cancelled stamp "Duplum Bibliothecae R. Monac.").

FIRST EDITION OF A CLASSIC WORK ON AMPHIBIANS. With a strikingly beautiful frontispiece after the author, preface by Alfred von Haller and plates depicting all the then known species of frogs and toads indigenous to the locality of Nuremberg. This is among the finest of natural history books and one of the great works of amphibiology. Wood himself describes the work as "one of the classics of amphibiology. The illustrations are of the finest, and the whole work is admirably done ... altogether a very valuable, early contribution to the literature of the batrachia." Nissen ZBI 3464; Wood 541.
