[Yue Minjun's Refusal - Four Sketches]

Created in 1998, Refusal - Four Sketches (Lot 1462) is a rare and unique set of four early watercolour self-portraits by Yue Minjun. During his early career working in the experimental work in the Yuan Mingyuan artist village, he developed the signature style of using images of himself. Along with his peers, Yue maintained his cynical view at core and saw the act of painting themselves and the world around them as the first view of radical gesture in celebrating the anti-hero. Infused with this type of rebelliousness, Yue created these absurdist depictions of his random exploration of the various orifices in his head with his finger or fist.
