FIRST EDITION of the fascinating visual representation of the findings of the ninth American census of 1870. Through the use of colored maps and intricate forms of bar charts, the figures collected in the twenty-four published volumes of the census results are made more accessible and immediately intelligible. It was decided "That a Statistical Atlas... be prepared for distribution to the public libraries, learned societies, colleges and academies, with a view to promote that higher kind of political education" (Preface). Walker had been superintendent of the ninth census and established his reputation as a statistician. In the 1870 census, he had to work under the act of 1850, which substituted party patronage for intelligence as the guiding principle of census taking.
