William Heath Robinson was an illustrator of children's and humourous books as well as a contributor of cartoons to magazines such as the Sketch and Bystander. From 1903 he also began illustrating many advertising and publicity books for companies such as Moss Brothers with his charming cartoons.
He described the reason for the success of his comic drawings in his autobiography My Line of Life, published in 1938. 'Whatever success these drawings may have had was not only due to the fantastic machinery and devices, the absurd situations, but to the style in which they were drawn. This was designed to imply that the artist had complete belief in what he was drawing. He was seeing no joke in the matter, in fact he was part of the joke.'
