Julius Mendes Price was born in London and later educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He led an adventurous life, serving as a Trooper in Methuen's Horse for journalistic purposes in the Bechuanaland campaign in South Africa in 1884-5. He was present on an expedition to open up a route to the interior of Siberia, also visiting Mongolia, the Gobi Desert and northern China in 1890-1. Price travelled to the goldfields of Australia in 1895, was with the Greek Army during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, and went on another expedition, this time in north western Canada in 1898. He was with the Russian Army in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, acting in a dual capacity as illustrator/correspondent with the Illustrated London News and war correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. During the First World War he witnessed activities on the Western Front in the early months before being assigned to the Italian Front from 1915. Price later spent time with the British Army of Occupation in Germany in 1919. He also published several books throughout his life relating to these varied experiences, including Six Months on the Italian Front, 1917.
A selection of similar drawings by Price also depicting the Italian front during the First World War, are held in the collection of The Imperial War Museum, under the title 'North-East Italian Front and the Vosges, 1914-1918', (IWM ARt 5233 a-i.)
