Lot Essay

For the attribution, see for instance, the signed and dated painting in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg (M. Faré, Le Grand Siècle de la Nature Morte en France: le XVIIe Siècle, 1974, pp. 156-7, illustrated; and J. de Maere and M. Wabbles, Illustrated Dictionary of the 17th Century Flemish Painters, 1994, p. 64, fig. 125). The artist was probably a Frecnh protestant and is recorded working in the Hague from 1650-1676. He was in Antwerp in 1657 and became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1662/3.
