In their panoramic composition and low horizons, Laurits Andersen's Ring's expansive depictions of Denmark's coastline continue in a strikingly modern idiom the sweeping vistas of the artist's Golden Age predecessors, in particular artists such as Johan Thomas Lundbye. They are also characterised by an extraordinary clarity of light, which gives them an almost photographic quality, not dissimilar to the coastal landscapes of the American realist, Edward Hopper.
