1967 FIAT DINO SPIDER

Red with tan leather interior.
Engine: Vee-six Ferrari, double overhead camshafts per bank, 2 valves per cylinder, three double choke Weber carburettors, 1987cc, 166bhp at 7200rpm; Gearbox: five-speed manual; Suspension: front independent with coil springs and telescopic dampers, rear live axle with half-elliptic springs and telescopic dampers; Brakes: discs all round. Left-hand drive.
Ferrari and Fiat were able to make a very satisfactory deal when Ferrari's new vee-six Grand Prix engine, designed by Dino Ferrari and Vittorio Jano in the 1950's, had to be produced in numbers of five hundred or more before it would be allowed for use in Formula 2 racing. Fiat's production facilities clearly lent themselves to engine building in quantity whereas Ferrari engines were always assembled by hand. The idea was for Fiat to produce the Ferrari engine and use those over and above the few needed for Formula 2, in a sports car of their own design. As was to happen with some Ferrari types, the car would be called a Dino in memory of Enzo Ferrari's son. Happily, Pininifarina was invited to design the Spider body. The result was a very compelling pedigree; a Ferrari engine, a Fiat chassis and an open body which embraced all Pininifarina's flair and experience gleaned from designing some of the world's most elegant cars.
This particular Fiat Dino Spider is in beautiful condition having been totally restored. The vendor is a knowledgeable collector, the car has done only a nominal mileage since restoration, and the mechanic who maintains it on behalf of the owner confirms that it goes very well indeed.
