Reference 5970 was introduced to the market at the Basel Fair in April 2005 and replaced the celebrated reference 3970. The 5970 is 40 mm in diameter and just over 13 mm thick, impressively housing a manual winding movement with a column-wheel controlled chronograph function and a perpetual calendar complication and 24-hour indication. The model immediately enjoyed enormous popularity amongst collectors and was available in white gold or pink gold only until 2007 when the production of these two versions ceased. Reference 5970 in yellow gold was produced for just one year, in 2008. The model was then finally released in platinum and later discontinued, hence ceasing production of the reference.

Reference 5970 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by O. Patrizzi, Vol. II, Plate 1272, p. 314.
