Lot Essay

William Michael Rossetti suggested that the drawing was 'rather earlier than 1855' and identified the subject as 'gypsies'. The figures seem rather to be prehistoric cavemen, a curious theme for D. G. Rossetti, and one that does not apparently occur in any of his other early drawings or paintings.
