Lot Essay

Joseph Noel Paton drew many subjects from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress from his return to Edinburgh in 1857 well into the 1870's. The present picture is most probably a preliminary sketch for the work recorded in his studio in 1873 and now in Aberdeen Art Gallery.
