Lot Essay

The present watercolour was executed during Lear's tour of Middle East in 1857. He arrived in Palestine in March and travelled south through Jerusalem arriving in Petra by 13th April. Three days later he was at the Dead Sea and from there he moved on to Masada. Lear returned to Jerusalem and visited Jericho before travelling on to the Lebanon at the beginning of May.
