Lot Essay

The spindle-lyre trestles relate to a pattern in the 1818 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster executed for Ferguson, Whitesides & Co., who traded from Gillow's Oxford Street premises under their own name (G. Willis, Classic English Furniture, London 1974). Similar tables with spindle ends were supplied to the Tempests of Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire in the 1820s (S. Stuart, Gillows of London and Lancaster, Vol 1., p. 301, pl. 329).
