Painted in inky tones of grisaille with a portrait of St. Ignatius Loyola standing before a tablet inscribed AD MAJOREMDEI GLORIUM, the inner border with gilt flowering vine

Lot Essay

St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) was the founder of the Society of Jesus. See Beurdeley, Chinese Trade Porcelain, Fribourg, 1962, cat. 231 for a teacaddy with this rare subject. A pair of teabowls and saucers were sold Christie's, London, 14 June 1976, lot 181 and a single was sold New York, 23 January 2002, lot 78.
