Lot Essay

The thriving Chinese export textile trade included both silks and cottons, like this example, used in dressmaking as well as for bed hangings and other interior decoration. For a similar fragment from silk probably brought to Philadelphia in 1788 by Robert Morris see J.G. Lee, Philadelphians and The China Trade, 1784-1844, p. 66.
