MAKER'S MARK OF ROBERT GARRARD, LONDON, 1867, 22CT.
In the Elizabethan style, on circular spreading base chased with lobes, band of flowers, foliage and with ovolo and foliage borders, the baluster foliage stem with applied winged cherub busts and flanked by flower heads, dolphins and pendant bells, the lower part of the waisted bowl chased with lobes, the centre with applied eagle within Welsh inscription "ERYR ERYROD ERYRI", fox within "Y CADARN AR CYFRWYS", ram within "BWCH YN VCHAF" and wolf within "CWRW DA YW ALLWEDD CALON", with strapwork between and further strapwork above, the similary chased cover with openwork finial flanked by female caryatids blowing horns, the upper part with coat-of-arms with cherub supporters surmounted by a crest of a lamb with ruby eyes, the base engraved "MADE OF GOLD THE ROYALTY FROM CASTELL CORNDOCHAN MINE 1867", engraved beneath "R. & S. GARRARD & CO. 25 HAYMARKET. LONDON." and with weight "63 OZ 5 DWT 12 CRS.", marked on bowl and cover

Lot Essay

The crest of an eagle with the motto "The Eagle of the Eagles of Snowdonia" as borne by Owen Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd and the arms within the motto "The Strong and the Sly" are for Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn 6th Bt. (1820-1885) of Wynnstay .

The other mottos read "The Ram is on Top" and "Beer is the Key to the Heart.

The Castell Carndochan mine, at Llanuwchllyn, near Bala in Merionethshire was owned by Sir Watkin. It opened in 1863 and was mined until the early 1870's. It was later re-opened in the 1880's. The royalty was paid yearly in the form of one twelth of the mine's production. The payment for 1867 was fashioned into the cup and cover offered here
