Lot Essay

The present lot corresponds closely to a Roman portrait bust which was copied by Sergel in marble. He had seen the original in Paris, and returned to his native Stockholm in 1759 with a plaster cast of it. Once back in his studio, he carved the bust in marble and was to use it as a source of inspiration for many of his later works.
