Lot Essay

Plates of similar design were made over a period of years and are known in many private and public collections. See Michael Archer and Brian Morgan, Fair as China Dishes, English Delftware, London, 1977, p. 47, no. 25 for one dated 1688. See the Louis L. Lipski; Sotheby's, London, 6 December 1983, Part IV, lot 710 for another similarly initialed and dated, possibly the present example.
