The crest is that of Rt Hon Sir John Eldon Gorst (1835-1916), PC QC, an exuberant politician who achieved pioneering social welfare in New Zealand immediately after academic distinction at Cambridge. On his return he was called to the bar and elected Conservative MP for the borough of Cambridge, and later Cambridge University. He also served as vice-president of the Privy Council education committee. Gorst left the Conservative party over Chamberlain's tariff reform proposals but failed election as a Liberal.
