Lajos Csabai-Ekes (1896-1944)
THE GYULA AND ZOLTAN GLATTER COLLECTION This fascinating selection of works on paper comes from the family of Gyula and Zoltan Glatter, two of Budapest's most successful painters. Through their salons and gatherings, the Glatters spread the word of the avant-garde in Paris to their fellow Hungarians through pamphlets smuggled into the country and helped to develop what was one of the most exciting (and under-appreciated) centres of Modernism in Europe. Brought to England by the Glatters and featuring works by artists such as Viktor Belányi and Vilmos Nagy this group represents a cross-section of Hungary's vibrant artistic history, from satirical caricature to cubism and on to expressionism. It is also a testament to the efforts of a family of artists that endeavoured to preserve their country's legacy.
