1985 MUSIGNY BLANC (DE VOGUE)
The estate also owns 0.4 ha of Chardonnay vines in Musigny, potentially the only white Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits, though it is labeled as Bourgogne Blanc (there is no AOC Chambolle-Musigny Blanc, either at village or 1er Cru level). Production is miniscule, approximately 100 cases per year. This offering, however, is from the old vines, when the Chardonnay was still labeled as Musigny Blanc. The vines were replanted in 1987-1997, hence the declassification. 1985 Musigny Blanc, therefore, is one of the rarest wines in all of Burgundy.
Musigny Blanc--Vintage 1985
Côte de Nuits, de Vogüé
Lot 177 level: 2.5cm from wax; cracked and partially missing yellow wax capsule, number 257
Lot 178 levels: 2.5cm from wax; cracked and partially missing yellow wax capsules, slight sign of old seepage, very lightly nicked label with very light yellow wax staining, number 263
Both lots in original wooden cases
"In what has proven to be the finest white vintage of the decade, if not without competition, this was a stunning effort, particularly on the expressive, fresh and mineral-infused nose. The flavors do a reasonable imitation of a fine Chevalier with punchy, sweet, linear and superbly precise medium full flavors that are still quite youthful and possess an almost tannic character on the long finish. While I would not expect this to materially improve, it's clear that it will hold at this plateau for at least another decade." BH, Oct 1, 2005
