According to Anthony Janson, Thomas Worthington Whittredge and Jervis McEntee occasionally painted together. Often working at the same site, they would have exchanged paintings. It is known that Whittredge owned at least one of McEntee's works and a similar subject to this one, by McEntee, is in the collection of the Cleveland Art Museum. Dr. Janson dates this painting in the early 1870s.
