Lot Essay

Christies Important European Sculpture, 6th July 1993 lot 70.
It is interesting to note that while in exile in France, Mary Modena, wife of James II befriended a Nun named Anne-Louise at the monastery of Chaillot where she had a room from 1689-1712. Although the pendant on the present medallion probably dates from the 18th century, it is possible that it was added on the strength of a verbal tradition dating from the end of the 17th century.
