AN OUTSTANDING PRIVATE COLLECTION Collecting wine is a passion, and the more one knows, the greater one's depth of understanding, and the wider one's horizons become. Eventually - and this is the same no matter what is collected, old silver, paintings, even postcards - the time comes either to thin out, limit the horizons, or give others a rare opportunity to acquire the very best. This is the case in the present collection, from a private collector who enjoys both drinking wine and collecting it. He is a deeply knowledgeable collector - the collection itself attests to that - and also a highly educated man. His collection has been stored in two sections, both impeccably. The first is from the collector's home cellar, where conditions are perfect for long storage. The second section has been kept under bond in professional storage. I suppose - in the course of a broad, long, career in wine, notably, of course, at Christie's, that I cannot recall a private collection of wine of this size and quality. Merely to study the list is a learning exercise. Quite clearly, here is a collector whose depth of knowledge is not only extensive, but with a broad stroke encompasses not merely the classic, premier and grand cru estates, but hitherto lesser-known vineyards whose soaring reputation is the product of enterprise touched with genius. Having been through the stock list with a toothcomb, I can say without hesitation that it includes no wines that are less than outstanding. I sincerely recommend that you study the collection carefully and do not miss a rare opportunity to acquire simply the best wines currently available. Michael Broadbent, MW.
